Homework6-①

Last time, I wrote three poems. And I took comments about them. Such as

1と3はもう少し感情をいれてもいいかも。1は具体例があってもいいかな

1と2は若干、機能語(?)以外の言葉が多かった気がする。接続詞とか

I will rewrite my poems given these comments.

①I like reading comics very much

It’s very fun and interesting

Of course I like English very much

One day I decided to mix two my “like”

I started reading comics wrote in English

It’s also very fun and interesting

It is my best way to study English

②One day I took Eiken

passed first exam and challenge second exam

Second exam was interview

My first time of interview

I felt nervous, terrible and anxious

After interview, one delivery came to me

says “you passed the exam”

Happy delivery

③In elementary school, humorous ALT was there

He was friendly, students enjoy talking him

I like talking with him,

very enjoyable and fun

But he went other school suddenly

It was one big missing for everyone

And one hard, depressing missing for me

Homework 5

Today, I wrote three poems from ten memories of my English learning.

①I like reading comics very much

I started reading comics wrote in English

I can improve my skill enjoying comics

It is my best way to study English

②I took Eiken

passed first exam and challenge second exam

Second exam was interview

My first time of interview

I felt nervous, terrible and anxious

After interview, one delivery came to me

It says you passed the exam

I like talking with him

He was being very popular

But he went other school suddenly

It was one big missing for everyone

And one hard missing for me

Homework 4-②

This is a short list of my memories of English learning.

①In my high school, I studied English hard to pass the entrance exam.  I wanted to enter English major of education faculty in Gunma University, so I especially tried to study English hardest of all subjects in my high school.  And I like English the best of all subjects.  That’s also why I studied English hard.

②An ALT teacher in my elementary school was very humorous, so I was enjoying studying.  He communicated with our classroom teacher well and it was very interesting.  He made picture card to use in English class by himself.  It was so cute, so we could concentrate to see them.  Moreover, his English was very clear, so it was very easy to hear inside and outside class.  I talked with him to use easy English.  It was interesting time.

③I enjoyed reading comic book in English.  I like reading comic books.  So, I chose reading comic books as one way to study English.  Actually, it was very English.  When I read comic books which I read once in Japanese in English, I can learn what I should this Japanese phrase in English.  I can improve reading skills of four English skills enjoying reading my favorite stories.

④I talked with an ALT teacher in high school many times.  I belonged to dance clubs when I was high school student.  My dance club was not so strict, so I have enough time to not only focus on practice dancing but also focus on study.  So I often visit ALT teacher in my high school to talk with.  So I could improve my speaking skill.

⑤I especially tried to increase writing skill hard.  In my high school, one English teacher was very good at writing.  So, in his English class, we could improve writing skills very much in his English class.  And during summer vacation on third grade, he instructed us to write academic sentence using in entrance exam.  Thanks to his instruction, I could write academic sentence well until I took entrance exam.

⑥My first experience of interview in English was Eiken.  I felt very nervous. When I was junior high school student, I took Eiken because I could make advantage to have Eiken grades. I studied hard to pass the exam, so I could pass first exam. About a month later, I experienced second exam, interview in English. It was first time to talk someone in English mainly, so I felt very nervous.

⑦My English teachers in my high school were so great. In my high school, almost all student study to go to university. So teachers are very good at teaching. EK specially, English teachers were so great in my high school. Many universities are trying hard to educate English to bleed global jinzai. So English of exams in universities are difficult. However, English teachers in my high school tought us hard, so we could took exams without feeling nervous.

⑧In first year of university, I tried extensive reading very hard. We had to read 150 thousands words per semester, so we had to read many books. There were many types of book in library of Gunma University, so we could enjoy various stories. 150 thousands words are enormous figures, but I didn’t felt so because I could enjoy many stories.

⑨I was good at reading English in my high school. As I said this article, I read English in various ways. So, I became good at reading without noticing. It was good experience for me.

⑩I like reading Japanese literature in English as extensive reading. For example, I read “Kokoro” by Soseki Natsume in English. In the library of Gunma University, there are many books for extensive reading. Some of these books are from Japanese literatures. Sometimes I have ever read them in Japanese, so I can also learn what I should say some Japanese phrase in English.

Homework 4-①

This is my reaction to this article.

This article reflected the search conducted by an applied linguist, Aneta Pavlenko, in her important book, Emotions and Multilingualism.  According to her book, L2 learners sometimes feel frustrated confused, or lost when they have to express their thoughts and emotions in language that is not their main language.  And these situation is exacerbated when they try to identify the emotionally equivalent terms which they think best represents what they want to express in another language.

Many studies have been conducted to investigate how L2 learners express their feelings through verbal communications and how L2 users tell their personal stories.  And other researchers also show how L2 users use emotional words to express notions about love or anger in English and other languages.

The poem by one foreign student is shown as one example.  He described his first day in American school.  He felt anxious and lonely.  And he thought that he was afraid to walk into the classroom.  He imagined himself sitting in one dark room.  From this poem, we can read how he felt emotionally.  The poetry assignment aimed to help L2 learners to overcome the focus on form or grammar instruction that they had in their former experiences.

Then, why is poetry writing important for us?  This article is focus on one study.  This is that investigate the relationship between love as construct of feeling and writing in undergraduate Thai students.  Researchers interviewed the participants to express their thoughts or feelings in this study.

Homework 3

Traditionally, we have been teaching second language, L2, focusing linguistic acquisition or grammatical know ledge.  In the classroom, teachers have to consider which students study the form of language.  L2 writers have to understand connections between thought, words and life.  Considering this perspective, applied linguists discuss how they teach poetry writing in the L2 classroom.   In a education, poetry writing plays a different role.  L2 learners pay attention to its meaning rather than its form of language in poetry writing.  On January 12, 2010, big earthquake occurred.  Ulysse(2011) examined how victims understood their earthquake experiences and how the traumatic events were told in poetry forms.  Researchers chose methods which involved statistical analysis of the corpus of about 800 poems about earthquake written by Japanese L2 learners and deep analysis of issues in the poems.  Research showed that the poetry written by Japanese L2 learners was characterized as short, personal, direct and descriptive texts.  Sometimes they include some unique styles due to learner’s first languages or rhetorical knowledge.

This poetry is very important to us.  This is because this article wrote some studies indicated how poetry played a role to express its traumatic experiences.  And this article mainly discusses the ability about writing of L2 learners to express and tell their traumatic events in poetic form.  In this article, two big earthquakes occurred in Haiti and China were wrote as example.

Until now I read some poems in this article.  In their poems, I like Wonder if the bus comes the best.  This is because I could feel author’s feeling that he waited for the bus for long time seriously.  And in final line, I could feel he was so happy that bus came finally.

Home Work 2

A poem “Memorial Tablet by Siegfried Sassoon” was wrote in 1940 to response to the thread of the First World War.  He wrote his own experience in the First World War, including his own death-shell-struck in mud.  The role of the poem is to situate readers of poems in the impossible situation of experience. And this poetry enhances the importance of poetry seeing from the field of applied linguistics attempting to contend with the racist issues.  Historically, applied linguistics tend to use the power of instrumentalist and empiricist to show the own concept of it.

Seeing the field of applied linguistics, the poetry has tended to be restricted to the role  as the language education.  In the language education, the poetry is treated as a useful or useless tool to teach English.  In the adjacent field of theory of literature, the definition of poetry is “a dynamic and consistent strife from the situation of ontology”.  Authors imply certain criticism of the approach from the situation of applied linguistics to literature and poetry in general.  As we can inferred from previous discussions, the status of poetry results in part for pragmatic instrumentalism in the practice and discussion of language education and study.

Why is poetry writing important for us? Authors of poetry write their own experience and express them as one poetry.  Then, readers read them and share authors’ experience or feeling for this event.  This routine helps readers to experience various things that they have not experienced yet.  So, poetry is important for us.

Lesson 1 : Self Introduction

Hello!  I am Shoya Okubo!  This is first contribution of my blog.

I am from Saitama prefecrure and I went to Kumagaya boys high school.  Everyday I take trains and bus to Gunma University.  It take about two hours in one way, but I do not feel hard because I can sleep or I can do some homeworks in the bus and trains.

I was in a dance club in my high school and I am in dance circle in Gunma univetsity.  I especialy like break dance in many tipes of dance.  I often go to Tokyo to enjoy many events of dance.  I make many friends there, and I enjoy dancing with my friends in a  weekend.

Members of English major are very humorous.  I am not so, but I try to catch up with their energy.

Nice to meet you!
